Head Lice Treatment: Which Methods Work?

by jason ciment

Nearly everyone fears the very thought of getting head lice. If chills run down your back when someone you know gets lice, getting them yourself can be downright terrifying. If this happens to you, however, you aren't alone. Head lice treatment can, in fact, be very simple. There are several different methods that will rid you of head lice for good.

Before you can treat hair lice, you need to determine whether you actually have an infection in the first place. Common symptoms of an infection include an itchy scalp (from the lice biting the scalp) and visible nits, or lice eggs. The nits generally resemble dandruff but are harder to dislodge.

Once you have decided that you really have lice, you need to choose a head lice treatment. There are many different treatments, but not all of them are completely tested and scientifically proven. For best possible results, you are better off using the tried and true methods. Fortunately there are a lot available.

The most drastic method of head lice treatment is also quite simple: shave your entire head. Without the hair to cling to, the lice will find your scalp a far less hospitable place to live, and will be more inclined to move on than remain. Of course, baldness might not match your personal sense of style. If so, don't worry; other, more moderate solutions exist.

One very effective treatment for lice is combing the hair with a special comb. All lice combs should remove both adult and young lice from the hair. Some combs are available which will also remove nits. Before combing the hair for lice, you should oil the comb. This will allow it to move through the hair more easily.

Lastly, it is possible to use a chemical solution for the killing of lice and their nits. But you should not use a chemical treatment on very young children. The chemical permethrin can be found in many over the counter lotions and shampoos. Permethrin can be used as an effective head lice treatment. Also, if the over the counter products are not effective, more effective treatments are available with a prescription.

Head lice can be a frightening experience but if you know how to get rid of head lice, you need not worry. Lice should be gone within one to two weeks after the start of head lice treatment. Follow-up inspection is always recommended due to the chance of re-infection.

Many people, both children and adults get hair lice. Symptoms of head lice are itchy scalp and white flakes that resemble dandruff, but are difficult to remove from the scalp. Fortunately, there are methods on how to get rid of lice. One head lice treatment, although unpopular, is to shave the scalp because the lice have nothing to cling to. You can place oil on a lice comb to remove lice from the hair. You can buy permethrin, in a lotion or shampoo to kill the lice. If this treatment fails, an individual can get a prescription from his/her doctor. Chemical treatments are not recommended for children.
